Keep your anti-virus up-to date, as well as having a good firewall program such as Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs.com

Having two spyware programs has always worked good for me, Ad-aware: http://www.lavasoft.com and now Windows Defender to back it up: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&DisplayLang=en
If you have Windows.

Don't be stupid and open unsolicated e-mail, having good filters in your e-mail helps. Just don't download any old attachment–be paranoid.

Common sense and some very cheap software sold just about everywhere in the world….
